iGEN has announced sponsorship of Maltese athlete Fabio Spiteri for his upcoming attempt at the Brasil Deca Tri. The event will take place from May 20 to June 3 next year in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, with Spiteri aiming to raise €100,000 for animal shelters.
Event Scope and Fundraising Goals
The Deca Ironman requires participants to complete ten consecutive triathlons over a ten-day period. Spiteri will cover a cumulative distance of 38 kilometers swimming, 1,800 kilometers cycling, and 422 kilometers running. The Brasil Deca Tri operates as an annual ultra-triathlon series, with approximately 90 athletes worldwide having successfully finished the full course.Spiteri, 48, currently holds the Maltese national record for the double Ironman and remains the only athlete from the country to complete both triple and quintuple versions. His training approach emphasizes mental endurance, drawing on inspiration from his time in the London Paralympic village in 2012. All proceeds from the challenge will be allocated to animal welfare operations, continuing his previous fundraising efforts that generated €81,000 during a July quintuple event.
Earlier this year, Spiteri contributed €15,000 to organizations feeding Malta’s stray cat population and plans to distribute 200 cat shelters. His athletic history includes a 2021 attempt where he cycled 977 kilometers around Sicily in 47 hours and 40 minutes, finishing as the second athlete to complete the route within a two-day window.
